Awesome Stuff Women Did

Because women have done more in the past 10,000 years than just pop out babies and make sandwiches.

DISCLAIMER: We make no claim that all women featured here are saints. They did awesome stuff; the women themselves might not have been. Keep that in mind before sending angry notes.

SANDWICHES.

Actually, a man invented the sandwich.  (Not really, but they were named for one)

Pioneered the field of radioactivity, discovered polonium and radium, ran mobile X-ray units on the battlefields of WWI, oversaw the earliest research into radiation for cancer treatments, forced a reconsideration of the foundations of physics,  while being the first person to win two Nobel Prizes. We’ll probably never know how many women inventors there were. That’s because in the early years of the United States, a woman could not get a patent in her own name. A patent is considered a kind of property, and until the late 1800s laws forbade women in most states from owning property or entering into legal agreements in their own names. Instead, a woman’s property would be in the name of her father or husband.

For example, many people believe that Sybilla Masters was the first American woman inventor. In 1712 she developed a new corn mill, but was denied a patent because she was a woman. Three years later the patent was filed successfully in her husband’s name.

I mentioned this in Masters’s post, but it bears repeating, in BIG LETTERS.

Here is a list of things that women have invented (some that we even still use today):
“Apgar score” for assesssing the health of infants
windshield wipers
a way of processing film
non-reflecting glass
fireproof building material
the world’s first antifungal antibiotic
dishwasher
maritime signal flares
the cpr mannequin
radium and x-rays
the leukemia-fighting drug 6-mercaptopurine
drugs that facilitated kidney transplants and other drugs for the treatment of cancer and leukemia
pertroleum refining technology
naturally coloured cotton
white-out
x-rays to find the structural layouts of atoms and to discover the overall molecular shape of over 100 molecules including: penicillin, vitamin B-12, vitamin D and insulin
computerized telephone switching system
a material five times stronger than steel called Kevlar.
And even way more than that. Medical advances, scientific advances, amazing engineers, designers, doctors, inventors, film-makers, writers, artists, huminitarians, politicians, soldiers, and more, can be women. There is nothing a woman is not capable of doing just because she is a woman.

Just wanted to reblog this list too.  Also, the hydrometer.  And the home diabetes test.

Co-developed a medical research method based on looking for differences in nucleic acid metabolism between normal human cells, cancer cells, protozoa, bacteria and virus, which could be utilized to develop drugs that selectively block the growth of cancer cells and of noxious organisms, forming the basis for the development of drugs against a variety of disorders including leukemia, malaria, virus infections and gout.  Won a Nobel Prize in Medicine, without having a PhD.
